Close-up of Dr. Derman, smiling and dressed in a black suit, white shirt, and dark plaid tie, against a dark gray background.

Dr. Peter Derman

Dr. Derman’s approach to spine surgery is rooted in a lifelong understanding of human performance. A competitive gymnast from an early age, he served as the captain of Stanford University’s NCAA Division I men’s gymnastics team and was a three-time All American on the rings. This background did more than instill a high standard of personal excellence; it gave him a firsthand understanding of patients’ drive to return to the activities they love. Today, he applies that same elite-level discipline to his work as an internationally recognized leader in endoscopic spine surgery.

After graduating with honors from Stanford, Dr. Derman completed his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania while concurrently earning an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. He leverages this unique dual expertise for the benefit of his patients by bridging the gap between clinical excellence and modern practice management. For Dr. Derman, the "business" of medicine is about optimizing the patient journey to ensure that world-class surgical outcomes are matched by a world-class experience.

Following a residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and a fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, Dr. Derman has dedicated his career to advancing patient care via ultra-minimally invasive procedures. He was a partner and Executive Committee member at Texas Back Institute before establishing his independent practice, and he remains an academic and clinical affiliate of the group. A founding member of both the Endoscopic Spine Research Group and the International Spinal Endoscopy Research Foundation, he can often be found lecturing at national and international conferences, developing new technologies and traveling to teach these advanced techniques to other surgeons worldwide. Outside of his practice, he remains committed to an active lifestyle and enjoys spending time with his wife and sons.
